NITESHA KYOTO is pleased to announce an exhibition accompanying the release of Basket of Dreams by Daniel Niles. This newly published book, distributed by NITESHA and Eocene Arts, explores the significance of basketry in the human experience. With over one hundred photos, nineteen short essays, and one poem, Basket of Dreams explores basketry as an original technology and most ancient art, featuring the bamboo baskets made in mid-century Japan, when basketry became a unique form of modern art.

The exhibition at NITESHA KYOTO features six bamboo baskets made by Yokota Hosai, a master mid-century bamboo artist who worked with Charlotte Perriand in Japan and France. It will also include the baskets of other 20th century masters, such as Iizuka Rokansai, Tanabe Chikuunsai II, and Wada Waichisai III, featured in the book.


Daniel Niles is professor of geography at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Kyoto. His photos have been published in the Anthropocene Curriculum of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, and his writings on material culture, aesthetics, and environmental knowledge have been published by Oxford University Press, Kyoto University Press, the journals Nature Sustainability,Techniques & Culture, and elsewhere.

この度NITESHA KYOTOでは、ダニエル・ナイルズによる『Basket of Dreams』の出版記念展を開催いたします。本書は100枚以上の写真、19篇の短編とエッセイ、1編の詩を収録し、人間の経験における籠編みの意義を探求しています。中でも日本のミッドセンチュリー期に作られた竹籠を中心に、籠編みが独自のモダンアートの形態となった時期を紹介しています。

本展では、シャルロット・ペリアンの作品制作に協力し、ミッドセンチュリーの竹工芸家である横田峯斎(峰斎)による6つの竹籠に加え、書籍にも所収されている飯塚琅玕齋、二代田辺竹雲斎、三代和田和一斎など、20世紀のマスター達による竹細工作品も展示いたします。

本書は日本の竹籠、二十世紀の陶磁器や青銅器、民芸を専門とするアートギャラリーEocene Artsと二手舎の共同出版です。


ダニエル・ナイルズ
京都の総合地球環境学研究所の地理学教授。彼の写真はベルリンのHaus der Kulturen der Welt, BerlinのAnthropocene Curriculumに掲載され、また物質文化、美学、環境認識に関する記事や著書は、これまでオックスフォード大学出版局、京都大学出版局、Nature Sustainability、Techniques＆Cultureなどで発表されている。
