Better too big than too small?

In my daily work of buying and selling books, I always find myself questioning why there is a need to create such large and heavy books.
I don't believe that bigger is necessarily better when it comes to books.

However, on the other hand, there is a Japanese proverb that says "Better too big than too small".

In this exhibition, we have gathered books that go beyond the standard, being outrageous in size and bulk.
In the current era where various "things" and "matters" are being saved, it seems like both the body and mind might shrink if things continue as they are.
These seemingly wasteful and meaningless books appear to disregard pre-planned or marketing concerns, but they certainly convey the passionate enthusiasm and spirit of publishers, and that is something I can feel.

大は小を兼ねる？

日々買取を行うなかで疑問に思っていた。
なぜ、こんな大きくて重い本をわざわざ作るのか。。
本は大きければ大きいほど良いというものではない、と思っている。

だが一方で「大は小を兼ねる」ということわざも日本にはある。

今回の展示では、規格外の、突拍子もない、大きくて嵩張る本たちを集めました。

さまざまな”もの”や”こと”がセーブされた今の時代。
このままだと身も心も縮んでしまいそうです。

一見無駄や無意味とも思えるこれらの本には、事前の企画会議やマーケティングをものともしない、出版人たちの熱い情熱や心意気を感じます。
