Basketry is an original technology and one of the most ancient arts. Baskets are about people, plants, and landscapes, all at the same time.
Their beauty is strangely captivating, so completely natural and so evidently human. What do such things mean today, when the world is full of 'things from nowhere¡Ç?
Basket of Dreams explores basketry in the human experience and in Japan, where in the 20th century baskets made of bamboo became a unique kind of modern art.
Daniel Niles is professor of geography at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Kyoto. He writes on material culture, art, aesthetics, environmental knowledge and sustainability. Photos for this book introduce bamboo baskets made by Iizuka Rokansai (1890-1959), Tanabe Chikuunsai II (1877-1933), Wada Waichisai III (1899-1975), Yokota Hosai (1899-1975) and the other modern masters of the field. Twenty-one short texts in Japanese and English--and one poem--can be read in any order.
