This is Daido Moriyama's first photobook. It features photographs of traveling actors from a traveling theater troupe, which he began photographing at the invitation of Shuji Terayama (1935-1983), as well as his "Pantomime" series, which features dwarf show dancers, strip clubs, and fetuses preserved in formaldehyde. Terayama's writing, Moriyama's photographs, and the book's design by Shiro Tatsumi (1938-2003) create a certain clutteredness and uncanny quality that epitomizes underground culture in the 1960s. Incidentally, the late Shoji Yamagishi (1930-1979), upon seeing the book, described it as "a shabby photo album, poorly printed and wrapped in light green fiberglass," adding, "It was the kind of thing I would have been happy to throw away at first glance."
