Starting in 1975, Takanashi Yutaka photographed the streets of Tokyo over a three-year period, culminating in the 1980 photobook "
Town." After the 1980s, when land speculation and other issues tore even neighborhoods apart and dramatically changed the city, he began photographing Tokyo again in 1994, relying instead on place names. His attempt to capture a Tokyo that had lost its neighborhoods through place names required the photographer to shift his perspective from one of surface to point. Viewed from a modern perspective, the 1990s Tokyo landscapes captured in this book certainly appear vastly different. Is it really necessary to constantly document this city, which is constantly undergoing a process of scrapping and rebuilding, through photographs? The end of the book also includes a text by architectural historian Suzuki Hiroyuki. Signed.
