This is the exhibition catalog for Shozo Kitadai (1921-2001), held at the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art in Kawasaki in 2013. Kitadai was an artist of the "Jikken Kobo" (Experimental Workshop), which pioneered intermedia activities in postwar Tokyo. Born in Tokyo in 1921, Kitadai was educated as a mechanical engineer at Niihama Higher Technical School. After the war, he pursued a career in art through self-study, and from the late 1940s, during the period when he was active in the "Jikken Kobo" led by poet Shuzo Takiguchi (1903-1979), he attracted attention for his work in a wide range of genres, including paintings, mobiles, stage designs, and video productions. From 1953, he collaborated with Kiyoji Otsuji (1923-2001) on the column "APN" for the magazine "Asahi Graph," which led him to explore expression using photography, and he began his career as a photographer in 1956. After exploring constructivist forms in his early works and participating in the "Graphic Group," he also gained experience as a commercial photographer in the 1960s. In 1967, he released the "New Visualization" series, which created new images using unique techniques such as medical fundus cameras and multi-strobe lighting. From the 1970s onward, he became known for his kite and model airplane designs. He passed away in 2001.
