PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE NEW ORLEANS RED-LIGHT DISTRICT, CIRCA 1912
This is a photobook of Ernest Joseph Bellocq (1873-1949), a photographer who worked in New Orleans, USA, in the early 20th century. His existence was largely forgotten after his death, but in 1958, photographer Lee Friedlander happened to acquire 89 glass plates of portraits of prostitutes taken at a brothel in Storyville. After much effort, he printed them, and when they were unveiled at an exhibition curated by John Szarkowski, they quickly gained high praise and led to a resurgence of his work. This book contains 34 of the 89 negatives that were actually exhibited.
