This is a visual book for the 2000 film "Downtown 81" starring Jean-Michel Basquiat, the artist who died prematurely at age 27. Filming took place between December 1980 and January 1981, with funding from Rizzoli, but production was halted in the mid-1980s due to financial difficulties. After Basquiat's death in 1999, production resumed, and the film was released under a new title, changing its title from "New York Beat". The book's extensive collection of photographs, including a homeless Basquiat and images of Warhol during his lifetime, offers insight into the New York scene of the time.
