This book constitutes the second chapter of Zhen Shi¡Çs long-term project, *Memories of Things Past*. Sparked by a chance encounter with the diary of a 19th-century Belgian family, the artist traces their trajectory from an external perspective. What began as a simple archival investigation evolved into a series of coincidences and a tragedy, drawing the artist herself into an unexpected family history. By weaving together diverse materials—including texts, photographs, letters, and archival documents—the work explores the shifting relationship between personal memory and historical record. It quietly questions how we understand and narrate the past, and how archives blur the boundaries between reality and fiction. Readers are invited into layers where private events intersect with broad questions of time and interpretation, guided toward a contemplation of the space between memory and reality.
