Ernest Satow (1927-1990) was born on March 22, 1927 to a Japanese father and an American mother in Tokyo. After the war, he entered Waseda University, and he was active as a music instructor and critic. He traveled to the United States in the 1950s, majoring in music history and art history at Oklahoma State University and Columbia University. He then got a job at the New York branch of Mitsubishi Bank in 1956, where he saved money to buy two Leicas and four lenses and went to Mexico to take pictures. He retired from his job in 1957 and gave himself a period of about six months to hone his development skills in the darkroom (the results of his research resulted in his later book, 35mm Negas and Prints. ), Started full-scale photography activities. While working as a photographer in "National Geographic" and "Life", he became a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Kyoto City University of Arts in 1973, and put professional-level enlargers and equipment in the student's darkroom. We also focused on nurturing younger generations, such as introducing them. Students who received his teachings at this time include artist Yasumasa Morimura. This book is a reprint published as a popular version in 2000.
