Originally published as a separate volume of the camera magazine "Camera Mainichi", the photo book "The Pencil of the Sun" by Shomei Tomatsu (1930-2012). As the subtitle "Okinawa & S.E. Asia" points out, this book focuses on monochrome photographs taken in Okinawa, where Tomatsu himself was based in the early 1970s. After that, I went to Southeast Asia such as Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore south of Okinawa, and color photographs taken in those places continue in the latter half of the page. The impression is that there are no useless photographs condensed, but the stay notes by himself inserted here and there are also interesting as reading materials, and you can see Higashimatsu's way of thinking about Okinawa.
