A collection of photographs by French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin (1928-1991). This book is published in two volumes, focusing on the works of the late 1970s, which is said to be the heyday of his career. The first volume consists of the now-forgotten phantom works created by Bourdin, modeled after Nicole Meyer. Volume 2 is a road trip through his visual landscape, including his texts, polaroids, poems, sketches, and contact sheets.
Bourdin was born in Paris in 1928. In 1948-49 he served in the French Air Force in Dakar, Senegal for military service, where he received his first training in photography. He retired from the military in 1950, met Man Ray (1890-1976) in Paris, and held an exhibition of his drawings and paintings at the gallery. His career as a fashion photographer began with an appearance in the February 1955 issue of French Vogue. He continued to publish his work in the magazine until 1987. His name became widely known in 1985 when he was awarded the Photographic Award (Grand Prix) by the French Ministry of Culture and Communications. Although often compared to the style of Helmut Newton (1920-2004), his unique narrative is highly regarded for expanding the realm of conventional advertising photography. Makeup artist François Nars, the founder of NARS, also said that Bourdin's photography had a great influence on him.
