Unlike the abstract expressionism that was the mainstream in the United States in the 1950s, he is a leading figure of the "hard edge school" who develops expressions based on color relative ratios that combine vivid pure color panels such as red, blue, and yellow. A collection of works by Ellsworth Kelly (1923-2015), a famous artist. This book is a reproduction of "Sketchbook 23" produced by him in the fall of 1954. These illustrations, published for the first time, offer a glimpse into his working process at the dawn of his career. The inspiration for Sketchbook 23 came while Kelly was on a bus. Inspired by the shadows cast across the pages of a book, he took out a pencil and recorded the contours of the shadows directly on the page. When he returned to the studio, he developed ink sketches in his sketchbook and began experimenting with variations, cutting and layering shadow shapes. These black-and-white drawings were Kelley's first works, purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1957, and are the subject of much larger works, including some of his most famous works.
