This book is a study of unknown contact sheets obtained by photographer Diane Arbus during a portrait session of more than 300 photographs of families in New York over a weekend in 1969. Authors Anthony W. Lee and John Pultz agree with Arbus' claim that she was working on a "family albums," noting that she shot images of Ricky Nelson and Jane for Esquire magazine. Family photos of Jayne Mansfield and others will be presented and discussed. Her interest is grouping both traditional and alternative families in photographs. The author challenges the common interpretation of Arbus that her interest in people outside the mainstream is somehow representative of her own emotional and social life.
