Originally published by The Jargon Society in 1974, this is a reprint, expanded and revised edition of Ralph Eugene Meatyard's most representative collection of works, which has long been out of print. The series of 64 photos, both funny and tragic, grotesque and beautiful, shows his wife Madeline wearing a Halloween mask, as well as friends and relatives each wearing a transparent mask. In this book, critic and scholar James Rehm works directly with Meatyard's archives as well as his family to reconstruct Meatyard's original intentions, ensuring that the photographs are in the correct order, captioned and black. It is unique in that it is reproduced with white handwritten letters written by Meatyard himself in the background. Also included are interviews with those who took part in this bizarre endeavor at the time, critical essays, and a further 40 figurative works that explore his important themes.
