Cy Twombly (1928-2011) was an artist from Virginia, USA. Born in Lexington, Virginia in 1928. He was named "Cy" after the great American Major Leaguer Cy Young (1867-1955), who had the same nickname as his father. Cy studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (commonly known as the Boston School) in Boston from 1947 to 1949, and the following year, from 1950 to 1951, he used a scholarship to attend the Art Students League of New York. He continued to study hard and met Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) here. From 1951 to 1952, at Rauschenberg's recommendation, he also transferred to Black Mountain College, where he also studied with Franz Kline (1910-1962), Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), and Ben Shahn (1898-1969). I was studying under him. He also met John Cage (1912-1992) here. In the mid-1950s, he was a prominent figure among a group of artists working in New York, including Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. In 1968 he held a major retrospective exhibition. He settled in Rome in 1967 and remained the base of his activities until his death. This book includes paintings and sculptures that are also early works from the 1950s.
