In 1955 and 1956, Swiss-born photographer Robert Frank (1924-2019) traveled across the United States on a Guggenheim Fellowship, photographing ordinary people going about their daily lives. His photobook, The Americans (1959), became a touchstone of American identity and a landmark in the history of photography. But Frank then turned to filmmaking, and his early American photographs were largely forgotten. An exhibition at Stanford University's Cantor Arts Center, organized by curator Peter Galassi, focused for the first time on Frank's work in the United States in the 1950s. Published to accompany the exhibition, this book features all 131 photographs from the exhibition, many of which were lesser known.
