Peter Hujar (1934-1987) was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and moved to Manhattan, where he made his mark in magazine, advertising, and fashion photography. He was a quintessential New York artist, living and working in the East Village from the age of 16 until his death. Widely praised for his original and uncompromising vision, Hujar was also a central figure in the downtown New York cultural scene in the 1970s and early 1980s. Although he died of AIDS in 1987, many of today's active photographers have said that they would never have pursued photography without Hujar, including Nan Goldin, who was an inspiration to many. He was also known for being a one-time lover and good friend of artist David Wojnarowicz (1954-1992). This book features photographs of New York City at night, most of which have never been published before. These photographs document a lost New York before Battery Park City arrived: late-night semi-basements, crumbling cobblestones, landfills, Halloween costumed party-goers, dilapidated residential interiors, idyllic urban parks, dilapidated loading docks, and trash-strewn parking lots.
