This is the first book to collect exclusively the unpublished early work of color photography master Joel Sternfeld. In 1969, he began using 35mm cameras and Kodachrome film, and this book covers his work from this period up to 1980. It features irony, political views of America, and concerns about the social situation. But it also contains color compositions similar to those of William Eggleston, and photographs that have little to do with Sternfeld's later work, such as street photography, which he stopped taking in 1976. It was taken at a time when color photography was struggling to compete with the established black and white tradition.
