Conceived and edited by film director Martin Bell, who was the husband of photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) and a close friend of hers for 30 years, this book is a comprehensive collection of over 600 photographs and a wide variety of texts that tell the story of her extraordinary life, work, and vision. Bell has selected over 2 million frames from the thousands of contact sheets and films Mary left behind. Among them are her iconic photographs, some of which were once published but have since been lost over time, and some of her favorite photos that have yet to be published. The three volumes are arranged in chronological order from the 1960s to the 2010s, and are luxuriously bound in cloth with photographs printed on the covers, in a box set.
