Approximately 5,000 photographs purchased by photographer Berenice Abbott (1898-1991) from Eugene Atget (1857-1927) in 1929 were added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1968. This book is a set of four volumes that compiles the results of that research, each one organized by theme. It was edited by John Szarkowski, who was a renowned curator at the museum at the time. The book includes a preface by Maria Morris Hambourg. At the end of each volume, there is an explanation for each photographic plate, making it a highly useful resource.
