This long-awaited photobook, finally released in 2011, is a revised and expanded version of the models for Josef Koudelka's book Gypsies. In 1968, Koudelka and graphic designer Milan Kopriva created the original model for Gypsies, which was to be published in Prague in 1970. However, Koudelka left Czechoslovakia in 1970, and the book was never published in its original form. This book is an expanded version of the 1975 book "Gitans. La fin du voyage (Gypsies. The End of the Journey)", and consists of 109 photographs taken between 1962 and 1971 in the former Czechoslovakia (Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia), Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain. Koudelka's bleak images depict the poverty and isolation of gypsy life, but he doesn't portray this situation as a social problem that needs to be solved somehow, but rather as eternal outsiders, a primitive existence whose lives are filled with a mixture of joy and wonder, sadness and mystery. The black and white printing is strongness on matte paper makes the book highly acclaimed as a photo collection.
