Yan Kallen was born in Hong Kong in 1981. After studying at Central Saint Martins in London and Parsons School of Design in New York, she began her career as an art director in print and publishing in New York and Amsterdam. She continues to create artwork while also designing stamps and postal materials for the Hong Kong Post. Working primarily through photography, sculpture, and video installation, she draws inspiration from traditional Eastern philosophy to explore the relationship between humanity and nature. This book was published in conjunction with a project presented at the 2017 KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival. It features a collection of photographs captured during a six-month residency in Kyoto—a city renowned for its traditional crafts and culture—reflecting her deep respect for the workshops of local artisans, their traditional techniques, and the tools passed down through generations.
