Yan Kallen was born in Hong Kong in 1981. After studying at Central Saint Martins (London) and Parsons School of Design (New York), he began his career as an art director in print and publishing in New York and Amsterdam. He currently works at the Hong Kong Post, where he designs stamps and postal materials, while continuing to pursue his own artistic practice. Utilizing photography, sculpture, and video installation, his work explores the relationship between humanity and nature, drawing inspiration from traditional Eastern philosophy. This book—created after his return to Hong Kong from Kyoto—reflects his personal understanding of and feelings toward the city, interpreted through the lens of traditional Chinese painting styles and the concept of enlightenment found in Song Dynasty Zen Buddhism. The book’s interior features a continuous, accordion-folded sequence of photographs, juxtaposing brand-new high-rise buildings with older, traditional structures.
