Marie Ellen Mark is a photographer from Philadelphia, PA. Studied painting and art history at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1965 he started his career as a freelance photographer, earning a Fulbright scholarship and staying in Turkey for photography. This book is a series of documents about patients admitted to Oregon Hospital, the best known of her works. Originally, a woman I met in the 81st ward, who originally visited to produce the story of the movie, motivated me to enter this hospital. In February 1976, just before the ward was closed, Marie and writer and social scientist Karen Folger Jacobs settled in the ward and spent 36 days trying to document photographs and text. The first edition was published in 1979 by Simon and Schuster, Inc., a collection of photographs as a compilation. The new edition of this book contains 10 unpublished photographs that were not included in the first edition.
