In the spring of 2011, Yoshihiko Ueda finally made his first trip to Yakushima, which he had been planning for 20 years. The works in this book feature old trees that have been cultivated since ancient times due to the unique climate. The photos convey the quiet breathing of the plants that continue to live on the island, which was formed about 13 million years ago, including Yakusugi trees over 1,000 years old, including Jomon cedars. As with his previous work, "QUINAULT," he used an 8x10 large-format camera, but this time, unlike his perfectionist approach to light and composition, he sees the coincidence of photography as one of the attractions, and even allows for unexpected scenes, showing a change in the photographer's mindset. By the way, the title "Materia" means "tree trunk" in Latin.
