This catalogue was produced to accompany the retrospective of the unusual contemporary artist Allen Ruppersberg, held at the Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf in 2005. Ruppersberg belongs to the first generation of North American artists who use language as a medium and who critically address various areas of mass media and consumer society. He has contributed to the history of conceptual art since the late 1960s, yet he seems unclassifiable and elusive. He is especially inspired by the Beat Generation and various movements that emerged at the same time in California. The exhibition of this artist, who was undergoing a re-evaluation at the time, comprises 50 works from 1968 to 2005, including existing works as well as specially created or recreated works, and focuses on the evolutionary aspect that characterizes the artist's approach.
