Cecil Beaton (1904-1980), known for his work on fashion magazines such as Vanity Fair and Vogue before and after the war, writes in this book, through photography and literature, about his impressions of a visit to Japan in 1957. While the book thoroughly covers various aspects of Japanese culture, such as kabuki, Japanese dance, and geisha, it also displays his unique aesthetic sense and sensibility. While there is a typical Japonisme, as seen through the eyes of foreigners, the many scenes of 1950s Japan that have already been lost appear fresh even to Japanese eyes. The cover illustration was also hand-drawn by Beaton, revealing the versatile side of the photographer.
