This photo collection by Shinzo Fukuhara (1883-1948), the first president of Shiseido and a pioneer in the dawn of modern Japanese photography, is the sixth of seven photobooks he published during his lifetime. It is also the third in a landscape trilogy, following Beautiful West Lake and
The Old Town of Matsue. It consists of two parts: nine photographs taken on the island of Oahu between February and March 1936, and fifteen photographs taken on the Big Island of Hawaii in the same month of the same year. The binding follows the previous two, with the main text carefully constructed with pages that open easily and are glued together. Fukuhara said he struggled a bit with the different lighting conditions than in Japan, but later recalled that his photography in Hawaii was excellent, and that for someone with a camera, it was a completely different world.
