Photographer Masatoshi Naito first visited Tono in the fall of 1971. This book is Naito's version of the Tale of Tono, a compilation of photographs taken between 1971 and 1975, including new works. Naito's extensive fieldwork in the Tohoku region, exploring Tohoku folk beliefs, old women, and Shugendo, and this book can be seen as an extension of that work. He consciously and intensively employs strobes, a unique medium for newspaper photojournalism at the time, as a form of photographic expression. His subject matter begins with people and objects, eventually expanding to landscapes where the strobe's light may or may not reach. The objects illuminated against the dark night create a somewhat eerie, eerie impression throughout the book. The Tohoku region is a special place that photographers find fascinating, as seen in Daido Moriyama's "
Tales of Tono," Issei Suda's "
The Journey to Osorezan," and Kazuo Kitai's "Tsugaru Shimokita."
