Kazuo Kitai began his career by photographing the student movements and political struggles of the radical 1960s, later turning his focus away from the city toward the traditional, idyllic villages of a bygone era. However, as the 1980s arrived, he found himself unable to reconcile with an era defined by relentless change and progress. Paralyzed by a fear of taking photographs and mired in a creative slump, he began to meticulously re-examine the world immediately around him. Living at the time in Funabashi—a city then characterized by burgeoning new residential developments—Kitai started photographing these housing complexes and suburban neighborhoods. This book emerged as a result of a formal commission from the Funabashi City government, serving as a kind of ascent from the depths of his personal and professional crisis. It is a collection of photographs and essays—compiled over the course of five years—that documents the lives of Funabashi residents living in these suburban housing complexes.
