Balthus (1908-2001), arguably the last painter of the twentieth century, maintained a lifelong interest in the ambiguity and dark side of childhood, resulting in some of his most famous and iconic works. He captured his young models with an intuition that combined erotic desire with ascetic rigor. These scenes are frequently accompanied by enigmatic cats, who may be stand-ins for the artist himself. This is the first book dedicated to cats and young girls, and focuses on Balthus's early decades, from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. Author Sabine Rewald draws on her extensive knowledge of Balthus's life and work, as well as interviews with him and his models, to explore the origins and evolution of Balthus' obsession with adolescence and cats.
