This is a set of two vintage prints by Felice Beato (1832–1909), a photographer renowned for his work in East Asia during the final years of the Edo period (Bakumatsu). Mounted on either side of a single backing sheet, the images depict a woman serving tea and a portrait of two Buddhist nuns. These prints appear to have been removed from an album originally sold to a client and subsequently mounted on this backing. They utilize the albumen print process—the standard technique of the era—enhanced with hand-coloring. The "tea-serving woman" image is a popular one, held in the collection of the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum; it was also featured in the museum's April 2025 exhibition, "Fueki-Ryuko" (Continuity and Change), commemorating the 30th anniversary of its full opening. The image of the nuns is also found in Beato's seminal work, *Views of Japan*; however, the distinct background suggests it originated from a specially commissioned album created for a specific client. Regardless of their provenance, these photographs are recognized not merely as souvenirs for foreigners but as genuine works of art, capturing invaluable glimpses of Japanese culture during the closing days of the shogunate.
