"Sleeping by the Mississippi" is the defining book of photographer Alec Soth's career and his masterpiece. The series, which grew out of a road trip along the Mississippi River, captures America's iconic but often overlooked "third coast." Armed with a large-format camera and using color format, Soth captures coastal people, landscapes, and sometimes interiors in an eclectic way. Its spiritual foundation is not bound by rigid concepts or ideologies, as in Robert Frank's classic "The Americans," but rather the typical American wanderlust. The subject of this book may not be the state of Mississippi, but rather its organizational structure. This is the first edition published by Steidl.
