Albert Kahn (1860-1940), a banker and businessman who amassed a vast fortune through gold and diamond speculation and used it to establish a bank, personally financed "Les Archives de la Planete," an ambitious project to photograph the world's cultures from 1908 to 1931. This project dispatched photographers to 50 countries, capturing 183,000 meters of film and 72,000 color autochromes. However, the Great Depression of 1929 worsened Kahn's economic situation, and he went bankrupt in 1936. His photographic archive was subsequently purchased and housed by the Seine department of France. This book is the first in a series of portfolios produced by the department in 1982. It contains 45 photographs of the Paris cityscape taken between 1911 and 1929, printed on Kodak photographic paper. The size is so realistic that it makes you feel as if you have wandered into old Paris.
