Yamazawa Eiko (1899-1995), a pioneer among Japanese women photographers, was born in Osaka in 1899. She loved painting from an early age and initially majored in Japanese painting at Tokyo Women's Art School. However, while concentrating on her studies in Japanese painting, she also had an interest in Western culture, and after graduating from the school, she attended the YWCA to learn English. During this time, she also showed interest in Hiratsuka Raicho's women's liberation movement, and a fundamental awareness of women's independence began to take root in her mind, and in 1926, at the age of 27, she traveled to the United States alone. In America, she studied at the California School of Fine Arts to further her painting studies. However, by chance, she stopped by a photo shop near her lodgings and became an assistant to Consuelo Kanaga (1894-1978), and Yamazawa's life suddenly turned toward photography. The American photography world at that time was also the time of the rise of modern photography in America, centered around Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946). From Ms. Kanega, she learned about the approach to portraits that capture the inner lives of people, as well as lighting techniques, and in 1929, when the Great Depression occurred, she returned to Japan and opened a photo studio in Osaka. She began to work in photography as a full-fledged career. From the 1930s to the 1940s, she worked in studio photography and stage photography, steadily building her career, but in 1955, she went on a reporting trip to New York, and from this time on, her consciousness changed to abstract photography. Her creative drive did not fade with age, even when she broke her femur in 1984 and was no longer able to use a camera. She also created paper collage works using paper. She had an incredible curiosity that did not fade until her death.
This book is composed of monochrome and abstract color photographs taken from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Poems by Iku Takenaka (1904-1982) and Fuyue Anzai (1898-1965) are also interspersed throughout the layout. He is one of the photographers who has been reevaluated in recent years due to a large-scale retrospective held at the Otani Memorial Museum of Art in Nishinomiya City and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 2019 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth.
