Ryan McGinley has been documenting his friends and peers through photography since the beginning of his career. From organizing annual road trips with 20-somethings to documenting their summer adventures to documenting their wild youth in downtown New York, he is known as the ultimate storyteller of freedom and youthful abandon. A few years ago, he wanted to challenge his creative habits in a new way, so he asked over 100 friends and colleagues to take nude self-portraits using mirrors and other props, with detailed instructions and camera directions from McGinley. While this may seem like a typical selfie idea, participants could not see what the photo would look like before pressing the shutter, and McGinley chose the final photo, which was a bit of a unique approach to elevating it to a work of art.
