This catalog was produced to accompany a 2011 exhibition of Kazuo Kitai’s photographs at Zen Foto Gallery in Tokyo. It features images of *toji-ba*—natural hot spring sites that have served as places for recuperation and healing for centuries, dating back thousands of years. In the early 1970s, Kitai visited these *toji-ba* in the Tohoku region, where he frequently encountered local farmers taking extended breaks. In an era when the tradition of communal, uninhibited bathing—and the social bonds forged through such shared nakedness—is fading, the subjects in these photographs, who face the camera with complete lack of guardedness, offer a glimpse into a bygone, idyllic Japan—a world of village life that has since vanished. This copy is signed by both Kazuo Kitai and the publisher, Mark Pearson.
