German Expressionism was a unique, comprehensive artistic movement in Germany that flourished for only a single decade—the 1920s—before being suppressed under the Nazi regime, which labeled it "degenerate art." The 1920s was an era in which nations around the world celebrated their own distinct artistic expressions, such as Art Nouveau in France and the Taisho Roman style in Japan. Following the publication of his work *To the Village* (*Mura e*), Kitai—through conversations with Etsuro Ishihara (1941–2016) of the Zeit-Foto Salon—became drawn to the architecture of German Expressionism. Consequently, he embarked on a photographic expedition spanning four months—from May to June 1979, and again from December 1979 to January 1980—enlisting Chotoku Tanaka, who was residing in Vienna at the time, to serve as his interpreter and guide.
