This exhibition catalog focuses on the sculptures of Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a seminal figure in modern French art. It was published on the occasion of an exhibition held between 2003 and 2004 at the IVAM (Institut Valencia d’Art Modern) in Valencia, Spain. While Matisse is best known for his vibrant paintings and paper cut-outs, his sculptures also play a crucial role in understanding his formal artistic explorations. The volume centers on approximately 50 bronze sculptures created between 1901 and 1940, and also includes 30 prints, 20 drawings, and a selection of paintings that highlight their connection to his sculptural work. It illustrates how his formal concerns—such as the volume and movement of the human body, and the simplification of form—evolved across various artistic media.
