In 1978, shortly after the end of the Franco dictatorship, Kazuo Kitai visited Spain. Walking through Barcelona at night, he captured the people and the cityscape—in taverns, *tablaos* (flamenco venues), and back alleys. Having long documented rural Japan in monochrome, this project marked a new departure for Kitai: an exploration of color photography. The scenes presented here diverge from the stereotypical image of a cheerful, vibrant Spain. Against the backdrop of a society in transition following Franco’s death, Kitai captured the wariness he sensed among the people and the profound, lingering atmosphere of the city at night—all rendered through a unique palette of color and light. At the time of its initial release, the work was not necessarily well-received, as it departed significantly from his established style; however, this book invites a fresh appreciation for the breadth of expression of Kazuo Kitai, a photographer best known for his documentary work.
