"Number" was a photography group of about six or seven people, centered around students from Tokyo Zokei University at the time, including Shinzo Shimao, and started as one of the independent seminar movements. This book is a self-published book that they regularly released. Initially, it was produced using a simple system called quick copy, which involved printing with a tracing scope and then developing the image, but later they switched to offset printing. It is interesting that Kiyoji Otsuji and Yutaka Takanashi, who are from a slightly older generation, participated alongside contemporaries such as Hideo Suzuki (Hideo Suzuki), Shinzo Shimao, and Naoki Yanagimoto. The students, who were also members of the group at the time, were fed up with both the boring classes at school and the vague student movements, and this magazine can be said to be a photobook that reflects on photography born out of necessity, produced primarily by students with the participation of professors from within the university.
