This is a record of the performance art piece by Marina Abramović held at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York in November 2002. For twelve days, she lived on three elevated platforms installed within the gallery. In a space containing only minimal furniture—such as a chair for sitting—and offering absolutely no privacy, she neither ate nor conversed; she showered three times a day in full view of the outside, and visitors could observe her every movement during gallery hours. Knives with their blades facing upward were inserted into the ladders connecting the platforms to the floor. The performance stemmed from a desire to see if she could purify herself through the use of modest daily disciplines, rules, and constraints. It also stands as a testament to the artist's unwavering determination to endure the physical and mental ordeals demanded by the work.
