Bernd Becher (1931-2007) and Hilla Becher (1934-2015) met in the 1950s while studying at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. From 1959 onwards, they photographed structures such as water towers and blast furnaces left behind in Germany, using the same camera, techniques, and development methods. Their photographs are produced using a methodology called typology, and continue to influence subsequent artists and photographers. From 1976, they taught at their alma mater, the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and are known for producing numerous photographers and contemporary artists, including Thomas Ruff, Andreas Grusky, and Thomas Struth. These students are now known as the "Becher School" (Becher Schule). This book contains photographs taken in 1973, before the closure of the Hannibal coal mine in Bochum. Rather than capturing multiple locations from a single viewpoint, this is a rare series by the couple that captures a single industrial building about to disappear from multiple perspectives.
