Saul Leiter (1923–2013) was born in Pittsburgh, USA, in 1923 and moved to New York in 1947. Although he initially aspired to be a painter, he later turned to photography and became acquainted with figures such as W. Eugene Smith (1918–1978). He began shooting color slides in 1948; while his experimental style earned the recognition of Edward Steichen (1879–1973), Leiter did not participate in the *The Family of Man* exhibition organized by Steichen during his tenure as director at MoMA, choosing instead to quietly pursue his own unique photographic path. In the mid-1950s, after showing his color work to graphic designer Henry Wolf (1925–2005), he entered the world of commercial photography—working for publications such as *Esquire* and *Harper¡Çs Bazaar*—and introduced a distinctive style to fashion photography. Leiter¡Çs work returned to the spotlight in the 1990s, leading to the publication of photobooks, and in 2008, he held a solo exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. This book was produced in conjunction with a major retrospective held in 2012 at the House of Photography within the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg. It features not only his early black-and-white and color photographs but also fashion photography, works combining nude photography with paint, and examples of his paintings and sketchbook drawings.
